Sono of Goyang has replaced Kim Seung-ki, who resigned over the controversy over his assault on a player, and Sono of Goyang Kim Tae-yang has replaced Kim, who resigned over the controversy over his assault on a player, with Kim Tae-sul taking the helm. It is a shocking decision that no one expected. In fact, Kim has no experience as a leader. Kim chose Park Chan-hee, a coach who collaborated to win the title at Anyang KGC (currently Jeonggwanjang in Anyang), as his coach. Park Chan-hee is also in her first career as a leader. There are concerns because she has no experience as a leader, but they are leading Sono based on her young leadership.
※This article was published in the January issue of Jumpball, a basketball magazine, and the interview was conducted on December 4, 2024.
How did you come to Sono?
Kim Tae-sul was in Yanggu, Gangwon-do for his KBL Youth Elite Camp schedule. But suddenly, the general manager called and answered the phone, and he offered as a coach right away. And that day, he came to Yanggu and accepted the offer. At first, I thought it was a hidden camera. I don't think it makes sense. I was really surprised myself because I had no experience as a coach and no experience as a leader. I can't believe I'm still here because time has gone by so fast.
Coach Park Chan-hee called me the evening when the coach's appointment was decided and asked me to do it together. At first, I was very embarrassed. So I asked for some time. I was thinking about it, but he called me again the next morning. He said, "It's going to break anyway, so let's try it together." I was so attracted to these words that I made the decision. It was such a good opportunity, so I wanted to confront it as the coach said.
He said he had no thoughts of leadership at the time of retirement?
When I retired from manager Kim Tae-sul (Wonju) DB, Lee Sang-beom offered me a coach offer. At that time, I refused because I really didn't think about being a leader. About three years have passed since then, but I miss basketball. While I was coaching at Yonsei University for about a month last year, I thought that basketball was something I could enjoy and do well. It would be fun to realize my know-how and thoughts on the court. As soon as I was thinking about this, Sono offered me a coach.
Coach Park Chan-hee said, "When I had such a great opportunity, if I refuse, I will regret it later. I have no experience, but everyone starts without experience at first. I finally accepted the coaching position after thinking about learning."
Director Kim Tae-sul had a contract with an entertainment agency, and coach Park Chan-hee recently opened a personal YouTube channel?
He said that he would not play the game with Kim Tae-sul's agency because the contract period had expired. After that, he obtained a certificate while preparing for the leader. It was a situation where he had been preparing for the leader without belonging.
Coach Park Chan-hee's YouTube channel was made ignorant by thinking, "Should I try it?" I didn't mean to become a great YouTuber, but I wanted to talk about basketball and something I couldn't say in the interview. But I closed the channel now because I shouldn't harm the team in any direction.
Have you been contacted by the members of Ginseng Shinki who have a deep relationship with the two?
Director Kim Tae-sul, (Yang) Hee-jong, (Oh) Se-geun, and (Lee) Jung-hyun all contacted me to congratulate them. They cheered me on, saying I could do well. I am now a leader, but Se-geun and Jung-hyun are still active. Having them in close proximity gives me a sense of mental stability.
Coach Park Chan-hee, I was also contacted to congratulate Se-geun and Chung Hyeon. There was nothing else to say. I think I called him reluctantly (laughs).
All coaching staff have no experience in guidance, so there is a lot of concern.
Coach Kim Tae-sul is worried more about himself than others. He became a coach with no experience and no standard on how to manage the team. It really feels like I am heading to the ground. I have to learn by enlightening myself on all the bad things that are facing me. If you study hard from now on, you can get great experience. I am thinking positively that I will learn from that because it will break anyway.
Coach Park Chan-hee, I'm in a similar vein with the coach. I think experiencing it in person is the fastest. Just because I want to do it or because I'm ready doesn't mean an opportunity comes. I'll try to learn while breaking it properly.
Since I'm still young, I think I can physically bump into the players during training?
Manager Kim Tae-sul said, "I am not the same as before, three years after my retirement. I am going to constantly build my body. While bumping into each other, I am going to teach players the basketball that I want to play. I am worried whether this will be an advantage or discourage the players (laughs). Still, if it helps, I think it would be better to show them in person. I will work with the players and create a team.
Coach Park Chan-hee, "I just retired. I try to show them in person, and especially when it comes to 2-2 defense, it's best to show them with my body. I think players can understand it faster if they bump into each other in person. (I think I can win even if I have a one-on-one match with players right now.) Since players should not get injured, I try my best to do my best (laughs).
I think it would have been the first thing to calm down the atmosphere because there was an unsavory incident on the team recently.
I never thought I should calm down the mood of coach Kim Tae-sul. As a professional player, such a situation can happen anytime. More situations arise in a professional league. All players have to do is what they have to do in the court. He stressed this part. "I think I will forget it in time."
I 100% understand what coach Park Chan-hee meant. He doesn't want to interfere outside the court. Instead, he emphasizes what you have to do inside the court. If I can't do this, I don't think I'm qualified as a professional player. I agree with the coach and try to lead the players accordingly.
The emphasis on the horizontal relationship with the players is impressive?
Kim conveyed to the players that he would not be authoritative. A horizontal relationship does not constitute friendship.
I played my first game in 3 days after joining the team, which one did you prepare first?
Kim decided on his team's direction based on his previous record in the game. He said three-point shooting was his strength, and he ranked ninth among the 10 teams in success rate. He also had decent offensive rebounds, while defensive rebounds were at the bottom. Combined, they had moderate rebounds. Steele was in second place. Since he throws three-point shots well and is strong in steals, he believes that if he increases the number of defensive rebounds, he will be able to make fast transitions. There are many players who can throw three-point shots, but if he makes a process, he will be able to shoot comfortably. In fact, I didn't have enough time. If I had prepared 100, I could not even make 10. Still, the indicators from the first game to the present show that I am positive.
Coach Park Chan-hee, I think I had a very good ability to implement tactics when I was a player. So I quickly understood the direction the coach was pursuing. Because I didn't have time, they set a big frame for me, but there are players who are confused. I went around and taught them and showed them in person so that I could absorb it quickly. This is my role. I still have a lot to do, so I have to do more.
I don't think I would have had enough time to get close to the team.
Coach Kim Tae-sul didn't have time. I have a chance to get close to each other only after eating, but I don't know what they are because I don't have time. I can't figure it out basketball, but I don't know their personality. I try to approach them by playing jokes like the MZ generation using words that kids use these days (laughs). I was afraid of Coach Jeon, so I tried to break the wall.
Coach Park Chan-hee: I have a lot of players I've played with. I'm going to step up first and try to talk. There are so many things for the coach to do now. I think it's a position where I have to know all the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, and personality of the players. So I'm trying to communicate more with the players. 먹튀검증
What was the most disappointing thing during the losing streak?
Coach Kim Tae-sul's lineup includes players who are only good at shooting. There are not enough players to transport or assemble the game, which makes it frustrating to run the game. As a result, the team does well until the third quarter and often collapses in the fourth quarter. Players who have to perform well already are overloaded in the third quarter. We need to let the main members rest in the first and second quarters, but then no player can dribble. Except for (Lee) Jeong-hyun and (Lee) Jae-do, we tend to take care of everything. This is why we cannot transport balls if the talent pool is out. (Kim) Jin-yu, (Min) Ki-nam, and (Park) Jong-ha should increase more. We try to give them chances and give them confidence.
Coach Park Chan-hee, I agree with the coach. I don't have time these days, so I eat, have meetings, train, and repeat. We keep talking on the same agenda. As a result, we can't help but think alike.
What's the hardest part of being a leader?
Coach Kim Tae-sul said, "I had a hard time because I didn't wear a necktie very well at first (laughs). I got better after practicing continuously. As I said before, there are not many players who can carry the ball before basketball. As Chung is also injured, he needs to think more. What's more worrisome is that the current players will be overloaded and suffer injury.
Coach Park Chan-hee has a lot of difficulties. Because I spent a lot of time on the bench in my later years as a player, I could quickly determine what the players couldn't do and what they needed. Looking at the court broadly, I think a player has lost his stamina to the coach. I tell him that we need to replace him. As soon as the game begins, he tries to figure out what defense the opposing team has prepared. You can see the 2-2 defense once you take a look. I tend to write down how I defend and what I prepared. If I don't take notes, I get distracted.
What basketball do you envision in the long run when you are in full force on the team?
I think it would be the best if the team colors of SK Wyverns coach Kim Tae-sul (Seoul) and Korea Gas Corporation (Daegu) were combined. By banking on strong pressing defense, he can make steals and connect them to fastballs. Personally, I like fast transitions and running basketball. I plan to train myself to play basketball like this in the future. However, it is difficult right now. We cannot change it completely without training time. Unless something is certain, we can set it up again and throw a shot within 24 seconds." If Chung returns from injury and the members' ideas become normal and give strength to the rebound, the game of transitions will be possible. As Jae-do and Chung play together, defense can be dispersed.
I love the style of basketball that coach Park Chan-hee likes. It was the same with my style of play, and I think it fits the trend these days. KBL prepares a lot for defense. Therefore, it is not easy to win with set offensives. However, transition games cannot be prepared because the opponent's defense is not the movement promised. When I look at strong teams in recent seasons, I like transition games, and they did well in defense pressure. If the coach pursues this team color, I can help you a lot from the side.
How do you want to raise Lee Jung-hyun, who was once a national guard and is now elevated?
At the first meeting with coach Kim Tae-sul, I told him that I would not have a personal meeting with him. He is better at basketball than I am. What can I talk about? However, as Chung is used to playing basketball alone, he should know how to use his teammates. Patterns are absolutely necessary in basketball. Then your eyes and tempo control skills will improve if you watch the game later on. I want to broaden your horizons and eyes when you watch the game.
Coach Park Chan-hee, Chung Hyeon, has nothing to say technically. I have talked a lot about Chung Hyeon being a fan since he was a rookie. I wish he could manage the game more sharply. He can do it enough because he has the ability to pass and knows the flow of the game. Then just having Lee Jung-hyun on the court can put pressure on the opponent and the bench. If you reach a level where you don't know what the opponent is thinking, you will become a scarier player.
What is your goal for this season in Sono?
Coach Kim Tae-sul is currently suffering consecutive losses, but he is preparing for the playoff, believing that he will definitely go there. I don't think he will be exonerated just because he suddenly took the helm. I don't even want to think about that. Chung said, "I don't want to think about it
